Dhaka Chittagong Cox’s Bazar Rail Survey. Dhaka-Chittagong Railway line is considered as the most important corridor of Bangladesh Railway (BR).
The main earning of BR comes from the passenger and internal transportation of containers through this corridor. The section is a part of a major sub-regional corridor such as South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), South Asia Sub Regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC), Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), etc., and the Trans-Asian Railway network.
As the economy of Bangladesh has been growing by more than 6% in recent years, rising demand for domestic and regional Railway traffic cannot be satisfied with the existing limited infrastructure. Bangladesh Government has decided to convert the entire Dhaka to Chittagong Railway corridor from into DG double tracked line for capacity enhancement of the corridor and unification of gauge.
Moreover, Fouzderhat – Chittagong Port Yard (CGPY) MG single tracked section, which connects Chittagong Port with Dhaka-Chittagong corridor, needs to be converted into DG to increase container transportation.
Chittagong Port Yard (CGPY) and existing rolling stock maintenance facilities at CGPY also needed to be remodelled and converted into DG to increase container handling capacity.
Chittagong Port Yard (CGPY) and existing rolling stock maintenance facilities at CGPY also needed to be remodelled and converted into DG to increase container handling capacity.
Container staking yard and other facilities are to be developed in the port yard to minimize the container handling, loading/unloading & transportation time.
Business opportunities are to be explored to increase earning of BR from container services by providing door to door services, offering various promotions etc.
CGPY will be converted into multimodal DG yard so that both BG & MG Container express will run from Railway ICD yard, BG & MG Tank special trains will run from Padma oil company yard at GPTK & both BG & MG Food grains, Fertilizer & Goods trains will be operated from CGPY.
Government of Bangladesh has taken a project to construct single line DG rail link from Dohazari to Cox’s Bazar via Ramu and Ramu to Gundum near Myanmar Border.
Existing Chittagong-Dohazari railway track (47.04 km) is a single MG track which needs to be converted into DG to allow BG trains up to Cox’S Bazar & Gundum.
